A few days before I went into labor Sadie said, "Mom, Remember when you used to play with me?"
Boy, was that hard to hear. I had a pretty good pregnancy, but I have to admit, towards the end I REALLY got lazy and I didn't feel like doing much...and I know it wasn't any fun for the kids. I had hoped that with the extra time and attention the kids had from Jason they wouldn't notice my own loss of enthusiasm for fun. But apparently Sadie did.
Well, I'm feeling much better now and I'm trying to play catch up. So yesterday while the boys went to work for Jason, Sadie and I spent our day....just having fun doing whatever Sadie wanted. We spent some time in the kitchen making the kids' favorite chicken casserole to put in the freezer for later eating, we made zuchini bread with chocolate chips, we took Sammy on walks, visited neighbors in their yards, colored pictures, and watched a movie. Throughout the day we stared at Sammy and had fun holding and kissing him. Then Sadie set the table really nice with flowers and gifts and cards for Sam's one week birthday. A Puerto Rican dinner, complete with pateles, was delivered to our home by my friend, Suzette. Then we waited for the boys to come home to eat with us.
But the boys didn't come home. They were still busy working. Sadie ate her Puerto Rican meal and I kept waiting. Jason, Cole, and Aidan didn't come home until much later. I was already in bed and Sam was tucked in his cradle for the night when they finally arrived. It had been a long day for the boys, and they all had sore muscles. It's a good thing they had some wonderful food to put into their bellies. We have been so blessed to have delicious meals from dear friends delivered to us each night.
This morning the boys are back at work. Sadie and I just made Grandma Murray's "Hello Dollies"....only they didn't turn out as good as Grandma's, of course. It's now time for Hide and Seek and whatever else Sadie has in mind. I hope playing with Mom doesn't have to be a memory for Sadie again, but instead, a daily reality....at least until the next pregnancy.
